The Canadian Institute of Marketing has published its standards on this Web site. They have a global reach, based on well-established standards of marketing associations and educators. It is important for marketing organizations and marketers to be aware of the standards that influence the practice of marketing. Were you aware that marketing standards exist? If so, where do you find your benchmark of standards?

Marketing is commonly regarded as an unregulated business discipline in Canada’s colleges, universities, industry and the public sector. Despite its weave into the fabric of the smallest and largest enterprise, marketing is not well understood and marketers, no matter what their credentials (if any) continue to operate within rules and expectations set by employers. Without knowledge of marketing standards, applications of principles, experience in marketing products and services, and marketing ethics, uninformed employers may be responsible for underperformance of products and services that impact on profit margins and satisfaction of stakeholders. Do you agree? Why?
